About Ivan:
Ivan started short wave listening at the end of WW2 with an 0-v-0 RX, as amateurs were returning to the air. Joined the Royal Navy at end 1948 but not in the Communications branch so Morse code had to be self taught. Licensed as G3IZD in April 1953 just at end of lengthy training so for many years most operation was as a guest in such places as ZB1, ZB2, VS1, VS6, ZC5, VP9, MP4, ZC4 and VS9, whilst at sea in visiting ships.
Infrequent home operations were largely on 1.8 mHz CW with R1224 RX and VFO-BA-PA ( 6V6 10W). For the HF bands an R1155 and B2 spy TX (CO/PA) were used.
Transfer to the Submarine branch in 1967 actually provided more shore time and hence more radio activity, with the acquisition of a KW2000A. Following retirement from the Navy Ivan worked in shipbuilding for 10 years taking early retirement in 1993.
Since then he has flirted with SSTV, RTTY, PSK, 10 gHz (FM), AMTOR , satellite working etc. but the prime interest is CW contesting and DXing with forays into VHF/UHF portable contests.
